NECESSITY THE NEW GODDESS OF THE EARTH

by Lieutenant General (Ret.) Konstantinos H. Konstantinidis

Now that politicians have failed,
the experts, the scientists,
and life has slipped through their hands
like the doves of war,

a new goddess is needed,
symbolic and stern,
to embody the idea
and the virtue—

yet to be effective.

Necessity.

Before her, even the gods are persuaded,
and human beings are driven
or disappear.

If the Earth is to survive,
perhaps this new goddess can save it.

Let her become the Soul of the Earth,
the guardian of a new civilization,
a civilization of moderation,
of responsibility and Virtue.

And if she does not truly exist,
let her exist symbolically,
like the gods of our ancestors.

Let us discover her ourselves.

Let us give her a form
stern, yet beautiful,

with an olive branch,
a spear, and a helmet.

And let her message be heard everywhere,
until Necessity becomes consciousness
and consciousness becomes action.

And let the environment
be her garment.

For the Earth must regain her balance,
and support humanity,
before the downward path
leads her into chaos.

But somewhere along the way,
we forgot Moderation.

We took more from nature
than she was able to give us.

Every need became a desire,
every desire became consumption,
and consumption
became a new god
that destroys us—

instead of saving us.

The more we produce,
the more we demand.

And the more we consume,
the more we wound
the Earth that nourishes us.

Energy increases,
temperatures rise,
the balance is overturned,
and humanity
moves further away from nature,

and because of this,
it has begun to perish.

The Earth
is not a garbage dump.

It is our home,

and we must pay some kind of rent
to keep it clean.

A great village it has become,
adrift within the course
of our Galaxy.

And if each of us seeks
to tear it down in order to dominate,
that person will commit a crime.

Will we then live
among the ruins?

And if nuclear weapons become instruments
in the hands of the reckless,
and if artificial intelligence
is used for evil,

then the Earth
will have been exhausted.

Its future will be bleak.

And humanity
will search in vain
for another planet
to inhabit—

something that, for the time being,
remains utopian.

But there is only one Earth.

And here we must learn to live
with balance,

in peace
and in harmony.

THE GREEKS BEFORE COLUMBUS IN AMERICA – PART II

by Lieutenant General (Ret.) Konstantinos H. Konstantinidis

Archaeologists Bring the Evidence to Light

There are also references to long-distance trading voyages undertaken by the Minoans and other ancient peoples in search of valuable raw materials, such as tin and amber. The extent of these journeys, however, and their precise geographical range remain subjects of ongoing research.

Aristophanes, in The Birds, even plays with the word “Pelasgians,” creating an imaginative wordplay connecting it with “great birds.” This image may symbolically suggest a people constantly on the move, seeking new lands and new horizons.

The tendency of the Greeks toward migration and the establishment of colonies did not cease in historical times. From the ancient colonies of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea to the great Greek communities of the modern era, the Greek world displayed remarkable geographical mobility.

And perhaps future research, as archaeology, genetics, linguistics, and other sciences continue to advance, will shed even more light on the unknown aspects of the movements and contacts of ancient peoples.

The Greeks Knew More Than We Think

It is certain that the ancient Greeks knew more about the world around them than we often give them credit for. From the Minoans and Mycenaeans to the Ionian natural philosophers and the Classical period, the Greek world developed a distinctive tradition of observation, inquiry, and the pursuit of knowledge.

And regardless of whether the more adventurous theories concerning transoceanic Greek settlements are ever proven to be valid, it remains indisputable that ancient Greek thought exerted an enormous influence on world history and on the way human beings understand the world, nature, and themselves.

From prehistoric times to the present day, the search for new horizons has been an integral part of the human adventure. And perhaps this very unceasing quest constitutes the most enduring characteristic of the Greek spirit.

Epilogue

Did the Greeks reach America before Columbus? This question cannot simply be dismissed because it does not fit within the established, conventional interpretations of history. The testimonies, traditions, archaeological findings, the seafaring capabilities of the ancient Pelasgian Greeks, and the various indications that have been identified from time to time together constitute a field of research for Greek and foreign universities. Such research requires an open mind, investigation—something that is still lacking—and freedom from preconceived notions.

History is written not only through what we know, but also through what research continues to bring to light. New discoveries may overturn earlier certainties and lead to new interpretations of the past. Therefore, the written testimonies and the cultural legacy of the ancient Greeks throughout the world, combined with their seafaring capabilities, should be examined seriously and without a priori exclusions.

Perhaps, ultimately, the real question is not only “Did the Greeks reach America before Columbus?”, but why have we still not shed light on the ancient written prehistory of the Greeks? What is preventing us from doing so?

And the answer to this question will not be provided by dogmatism, but by the very evidence that archaeological excavation and scientific research will one day bring to light.

Ίσως, τελικά, το πραγματικό ερώτημα να μην είναι μόνο «αν οι Έλληνες έφθασαν στην Αμερική πριν από τον Κολόμβο», αλλά γιατί ακόμη δεν ρίξαμε φως στην πανάρχαια γραπτή προϊστορία των Ελλήνων ; Τι είναι αυτό που την εμποδίζει;

THE HELLENES BEFORE COLUMBUS IN AMERICA  – PART I

By Lieutenant General (Ret.) K. H. Konstantinidis

According to written accounts by various authors, as well as archaeological finds that have at times been attributed to earlier contacts between the Old and New Worlds, the view has been put forward that Greek seafarers may have reached the shores of America as early as prehistoric times and may have established colonies or trading posts in various regions.

The relevant theories place such hypothetical settlements in Canada, Florida and the lower Mississippi Valley, as well as in South America, in Venezuela, Brazil, Bolivia and the Amazon region. During later centuries, according to the same views, these seafarers may have proceeded toward the Pacific coast, to Peru, and from there toward the islands of the South Pacific.

In this context, ancient finds and traditions of Easter Island have at times been associated with these theories, as have accounts of white-skinned people who, according to certain local traditions, had arrived in these regions. Some researchers and writers have regarded these people as ancestors of later inhabitants. Relevant references are also included in the work of Charles Berlitz, Mysteries from Forgotten Worlds (p. 175 ff.).

The Aegeans: The First Seafarers

It is a fact that, as early as the second millennium BC, the civilizations of the Aegean had developed considerable maritime capabilities. The Minoan civilization of Crete and, later, the Mycenaean civilization of the Achaeans developed significant maritime expertise and engaged in extensive sea travel and commercial contacts throughout the eastern Mediterranean.

At the same time, tradition preserves accounts of great naval expeditions, such as the Argonaut Expedition to Colchis and the Achaean expedition against Troy. These traditions certainly testify to the great importance of the sea in the mythological and cultural consciousness of the ancient Greeks. Their connection, however, with the American continent is a matter of interpretation and not an historically established fact.

The Greeks Traveled Throughout the World

At the same time, the view has been expressed that the ancient Greek tribes did not move only toward the West, but also toward the East. In northern Japan, for example, the Ainu population survived into modern times, and various theories have at different times been proposed concerning their origins. Similar references to populations described as “white” in remote areas of Asia and the Pacific can also be found in earlier travel accounts and works of folklore.

Everywhere They Left Traces of Their Civilization

The explorer and merchant-marine captain Gerasimos Kolaitis mentions, among other things, related traditions concerning the Philippines, as well as a small island location in the Indian Ocean, which is also referred to in the aforementioned work by Berlitz.

Similar theories have also been proposed concerning the Canary Islands, where traces of ancient cultural influences have been sought and certain traditions have been connected with the very ancient tradition of Atlantis, known primarily through Plato’s dialogues, Timaeus and Critias.

Art Bears Witness to the Truth

Certain similarities have also been pointed out between ancient works of art and architectural elements of the civilizations of Central and South America—the Maya, Aztecs and Incas—and familiar decorative or architectural motifs of the Aegean world. Among these, mention has been made of motifs resembling the Greek meander pattern.

Similar comparisons have also been attempted in the linguistic field. Some writers have pointed out alleged similarities between words in Maya, Māori, Quechua and other Pacific languages and Greek words. However, linguistic similarities of this kind do not, in themselves, constitute evidence of common ancestry or an ancient Greek presence, since systematic comparative-linguistic documentation is required.

The Famous Glozel Tablet

The hypothesis of an ancient Greek presence is not limited to America. In ancient Greek tradition, we also encounter references to the campaigns of Heracles toward the West and Gaul, as well as to contacts between the Greek world and distant peoples of Western Europe.

Of particular interest is the famous Glozel tablet in France, whose authenticity has been the subject of intense scholarly controversy. Some researchers have regarded it as an extremely ancient artifact, while others have questioned its authenticity. Consequently, the tablet remains a controversial issue and cannot, without qualification, be used as evidence of an ancient Greek settlement in France.

Within certain interpretations of the Orphic tradition, the tablet has been associated with ancient Greek mythology and the campaigns of Heracles toward the West. Along the same lines of reasoning, it has even been hypothesized that the Basques might be connected with the intermingling of ancient populations of the region with groups mythologically associated with the campaigns of Heracles. This, however, is a hypothesis and does not constitute an accepted historical conclusion.

How Could the Ancients Have Crossed the Atlantic?

And here a reasonable question arises: how could ancient seafarers have crossed the Atlantic, and even the Pacific Ocean, without the technological capabilities of the modern era?

The answer is not necessarily impossible from a maritime standpoint. In modern times, seafarers have succeeded in crossing vast oceans in small boats without mechanical propulsion, demonstrating that human navigation can undertake extraordinarily long voyages even with limited technological means.

The ancient Greeks possessed considerable maritime experience and developed astronomical knowledge that could be used both for navigation and for measuring time and the seasons. Their maritime tradition was therefore undoubtedly a significant achievement of the ancient world.

The peoples of northern Europe emerged as important overseas seafarers several centuries later. The Vikings, in particular, reached North America around AD 1000, a fact that has now been archaeologically documented.

Πώς  μπορούσαν να διασχίσουν οι αρχαίοι τον Ατλαντικό;

Και εδώ γεννάται ένα εύλογο ερώτημα: πώς θα μπορούσαν οι αρχαίοι θαλασσοπόροι να διασχίσουν τον Ατλαντικό και ακόμη και τον Ειρηνικό Ωκεανό, χωρίς τις τεχνολογικές δυνατότητες της σύγχρονης εποχής;

THE CHATTERBOX (OR LOQUACIOUS MAN)

— by Major General (Ret.) K. Ch. Konstantinidis.

If one were to define loquacity, one might call it an incontinence of speech—a veritable “diarrhea of words.” The chatterbox is the sort of person who, upon meeting anyone, will respond to whatever is said by claiming ignorance of the matter himself—while asserting that *he* knows everything and that the other person will learn if only they listen to him. And if the other person attempts to reply, he cuts them off, saying: “Don’t forget what you wanted to say,” or “I’m glad you reminded me,” or “It’s good for someone to speak up now and then,” or “I left that out,” or “You grasped the subject quickly,” or “Be careful whether you agree with me.” He finds such pretexts to ensure that the person he has encountered never gets a chance to catch their breath. Having exhausted individuals one by one, he is even capable of putting to flight an entire group of people who had gathered to attend to their own affairs. He even intrudes upon schools and wrestling arenas, disrupting the children’s lessons by talking incessantly to the instructors and teachers. If people say they need to leave, he is capable of walking them all the way home. If asked to recount what happened at the Assembly, he does not stop there; instead, he goes on to describe the orators’ debate during the archonship of Aristophon,¹ or the battle against the Lacedaemonians under Lysander,² or even a speech he himself delivered to great acclaim. And as he tells these stories, he interjects criticisms of the crowd, causing his listeners to either forget what he is saying, grow drowsy, or simply walk away in the middle of it all. When serving as a judge alongside others, he prevents them from deliberating; at the theater, he blocks the view of the spectators around him. When dining with others, he won’t let them eat, claiming that it is hard for a chatterbox to stay silent—that his tongue slips as if moving through water and he simply cannot stop, even though he appears more talkative than the very swallows. Yet he bears it good-naturedly when teased—even by his own children, who, when they want to fall asleep, say to him: “Daddy, tell us something so we can drift off.” COMMENTARY

1. The verbal clash between the orators: This refers to the famous trial “On the Crown” (*Peri Stephanou*), which took place during the archonship of Antiphon.

2. The change of the democratic regime: This refers to the shift from democracy to oligarchy—specifically, the establishment of the Thirty Tyrants in Athens in 404 BC, following the demand of the Spartan general Lysander.

 3. The modern “chatterbox”: Today, the Internet could be viewed as the “chatterbox”; like an incessant torrent, it conveys information day and night without pause. Modern individuals are bombarded daily with a vast volume of information—often contradictory or even false—to such an extent that they frequently find themselves unable to form a comprehensive picture or make a calm, well-founded decision.

4. The Laconians and the value of silence. At the opposite end of the spectrum from the chatterbox stand the Laconians, who taught their children that “silence is better than speaking”—meaning that remaining silent is preferable to talking, provided, of course, that one has nothing important to say. From this attitude stems the famous phrase: “To be Laconian is to philosophize.” Economy of speech does not imply a poverty of thought; on the contrary, silence often signifies self-restraint, wisdom, and respect for one’s interlocutor.

 5. Pythagoras and silence. In his renowned school, Pythagoras upheld a fundamental principle: “Observe – Listen – Be silent.” Silence was not merely the absence of speech; it was a stage of apprenticeship: first you observe, then you listen, and only when you have understood do you speak.

 6. The semiotics of power. Leaders, kings, and powerful figures often employ semiotics. Without always resorting to words, they can convey their stance or intention through a gesture, a glance, or a simple nod. In the age of imagery we live in, many concepts are expressed through symbols (such as traffic signs, digital indicators, and abbreviations) to minimize the use of written language. Some of these are ambiguous—much like the oracles of the Pythia—leaving room for varying interpretations.

7. Discourse and modern politics: Instead of engaging in dialogue and attempting to persuade through reasoned argument, today’s politicians often clash—sometimes even resorting to insults—whether in Parliament or on television. When such confrontations escalate excessively, it can even lead to physical altercations within Parliament, unfolding before a public that gets a free front-row seat to a real-life wrestling match—a phenomenon not unknown in other countries, such as Turkey.

8. From words to deeds: Most people limit themselves to mere talk. Only a small number possess the gift, determination, and practical mindset to translate words into action and innovation. For the true value of one’s words is measured not by how much one speaks, but by whether one can put those words into practice.

 9. Does this remind us of anything?

And, truly, does this chatterbox remind us of anyone from modern times?

Someone who says one thing and then another, who contradicts himself, who speaks incessantly and makes grand promises, yet often struggles to turn words into deeds?

Perhaps, after all, from Theophrastus’s day to the present, human nature hasn’t changed all that much.

The mediums, venues, and methods of communication have changed; yet verbosity, the urge to always have the last word, and the difficulty of truly listening to others remain enduring human traits.

10. And now, how will we communicate with AI?

Will we be able to control it, or will our own creation ultimately destroy and devour us? (26/9/26)

9. Μήπως κάτι μας θυμίζει;

Και, αλήθεια, μήπως ο πολυλογάς αυτός μας θυμίζει κάτι από τη σύγχρονη εποχή;

Εκείνον που λέει και ξελέει, φάσκει και αντιφάσκει, που μιλά ακατάπαυστα, υπόσχεται πολλά, αλλά συχνά δυσκολεύεται να μετατρέψει τα λόγια του σε πράξεις;

10. Και τώρα, πώς θα συνεννοηθούμε με την AI;

THE PHILOSOPHER THEOPHRASTUS

By Lieutenant General (Ret.) K. H. Konstantinidis

Theophrastus of Eresos in Lesbos (372–287 BC) was one of the great Greek philosophers. He was the son of Melantas, a craftsman who was engaged in dyeing wool.

Theophrastus first studied under Alcippus and subsequently under Plato. His original name was Tyrtamus. When he later came to Chalcis and assumed leadership of Aristotle’s school, Aristotle, impressed by the beauty of his expression and the power of his speech, called him Euphrastus. Later, the people called him Theophrastus.

The late author and my good friend Apostolos Gonidelis writes that the city of Eresos in Lesbos dates back at least to the 10th century BC. Eresos became particularly famous for the incomparable poet Sappho, who lived approximately two and a half centuries before Theophrastus.

At that time, Eresos was renowned for its grain, which was considered exceptionally fine and, as it was advertised, suitable even for the “gods.”

Initially, Theophrastus taught in Lesbos, but he soon travelled to Athens, which was then the world’s centre of civilization. There he studied under Plato, together with Aristotle and other students.

After Plato’s death, Theophrastus followed Aristotle to Assos in Asia Minor, together with Xenocrates, Callisthenes, Neleus and others. An important scientific and philosophical school was established there. After the death of Hermias in 345 BC, they left with Aristotle and went to Mytilene, where they remained, teaching and collecting a wealth of biological material.

A Teacher of Alexander the Great as well

They left Mytilene when Philip summoned Aristotle to undertake the education of Alexander, and Aristotle took Theophrastus with him. While the two philosophers were in Mytilene, they also struggled against the tyrants Hermon, Heraeus and Apollodorus, who were oppressing Eresos.

All the cities of Lesbos sided with Philip, joining the League of Corinth, which was led by the Macedonian king in 338 BC.

When Aristotle founded the Lyceum in Athens, Theophrastus was once again with him. Later, when Aristotle was accused of impiety and was forced to leave Athens and settle in Chalcis, he entrusted the Peripatetic School, the Lyceum, to Theophrastus.

Theophrastus distinguished himself through his intelligence, industriousness, thirst for knowledge and character. Diogenes Laertius relates that Aristotle, comparing Theophrastus with his nephew Callisthenes, metaphorically said that the former “needed a bridle,” whereas the latter “needed a spur.”

Regarding the name Tyrtamus, the author analyses similar names which may possibly derive from earlier ancient populations. In antiquity there were names and words ending in “-amos,” such as Pergamos, Pyramos, Iasmos, Teutamos, Sesamos, and others.

In the Greek language, the forms tyrsos, tyrris and tyrsis are associated with a tall structure, tower, or fortification and, by extension, with the walls of a city. The 5th-century lexicographer Hesychius mentions words associated with walls and fortifications. We could therefore hypothesize that Tyrtamus—or Tyrsamos—might symbolically mean “the guardian of the castle.”

Certainly, here the historically uninformed and the malicious would immediately rush to search for some “pre-Greek people” who supposedly migrated from the north or the east, as though the region had previously been devoid of indigenous populations. According to the author, Greek presence in the region shows continuity from the most ancient times to the present day. Some, however, disregard future developments and promote the slogan of “open gates.”

Diogenes Laertius reports that an Athenian demagogue, Agnonides, accused Theophrastus of impiety. According to tradition, he was a common slanderer who, through his accusations, had brought several people to their deaths until the Athenians recognized his character and punished him.

A law was then passed, on the initiative of the orator Sophocles, according to which philosophers were prohibited from teaching. This forced them temporarily to leave Athens. The Athenians, however, realized their mistake, repealed the law, and the philosophers returned to the city.

Theophrastus remained unmarried because he believed that marriage interfered with philosophical studies. Aristotle had even proposed that he marry his daughter, but Theophrastus declined.

He was an advocate of moderation, which Aristotle regarded as a characteristic of virtue. He never became actively involved in politics and did not participate in political associations, parties or factions.

He was always elegant and wore clean, white garments and expensive footwear. As a genuine Aeolian, he was a lover of good food, enjoyed the comforts of life and did not despise material possessions. Indeed, he believed that pleasures, when enjoyed in moderation, were compatible with the philosophical life.

He also said that there was nothing more useless than ambition and that the hardships of life were greater in number than its benefits.

He was a cheerful man, often joked, and possessed a magnificent command of language.

Through his way of life, he disapproved of those Stoic philosophers who believed that filth, lack of cleanliness and rags in one’s clothing could make a person a better philosopher.

He left behind an enormous and wide-ranging body of work—240 books—which have not survived to the present day. The only work that has survived and made him famous throughout the world is the celebrated Characters.

He died at a very advanced age, eighty-five years old, after withdrawing from active life. During his final period he was unable to walk, and his students carried him on a stretcher.

Shortly before his death, when his students asked him to give them some final advice, he said:

“You must consider your actions.”
(Diogenes Laertius, Lives of the Philosophers, 5.36–41)

COMMENTARY

1. The Four Philosophical Schools of Athens

Four important philosophical traditions developed in Athens:

a/ The Peripatetics sought knowledge and an understanding of nature and humanity.

b/ The Stoics pursued virtue, self-control, and a life according to reason.

c/ The Cynics pursued self-sufficiency and freedom from social conventions.

d/ The Epicureans pursued tranquility, freedom from fear, and peaceful happiness.

2. Theophrastus and the Peripatetic School

Theophrastus belonged to the Peripatetic philosophical school and became Aristotle’s most important successor in the leadership of the Lyceum.

3. The Spirit Flourished in the Ancient Greek World

Even in the smallest cities, there were philosophers.
