What Became of Iphigenia?

Written by Konstantinos Konstantinidis – Amphiktyon

From previous articles, the myth of Iphigenia is well known: the goddess Artemis spirited her away to Tauris and placed a deer upon the altar in her stead. The true story, however, is different.

Ogygia, Volume V, by Athanasios Stagirites, informs us that Agamemnon fathered Iphigenia with Chryseis in the Troad, the daughter of the priest Chryses. After the fall of Troy, while wandering, she was seized by the Scythians and taken to Tauris. There she was made a priestess of the temple of Artemis and sacrificed foreigners, until the time when Orestes and Pylades arrived and took her away. She also took the statue of Artemis and brought it to Chrysopolis of Chalcedon, and later it was transferred to Delphi, where she found her sister Electra.

After her death, she came to the island of Leuke, where she became young again, was renamed Orilochia, and married Achilles. She died at Megara, where her tomb was located. An oracle decreed that she be buried at Brauron, serve as a priestess of Artemis, and be honored by women.

Euripides wrote two tragedies: one titled Iphigenia at Aulis, describing the events there, and another titled Iphigenia in Tauris, depicting the events involving Orestes and Pylades.

Homer mentions three daughters of Agamemnon. The tragedians identify Iphianassa as Iphigenia and Laodice as Electra. Sophocles also introduced Chrysothemis into his drama. According to Homer, Agamemnon promised one of his daughters to Achilles.

Electra was previously called Laodice. She was exceptionally beautiful and desired by many suitors. Aegisthus did not wish to give her in marriage, fearing she might introduce a rival to his kingdom. Eventually, he married her to a private citizen, who did not dare violate her virginity. For this reason, the Argives called her Electra, meaning “unmarried.” According to others, she received her name from the amber-like (electron) color of her complexion.

When Agamemnon was killed, Electra secretly sent Orestes to Astyocheia or Anaxibia, Agamemnon’s sister and wife of Strophius, king of Phocis. Because Aegisthus sought her and could not find her, he imprisoned her, though she revealed nothing. When she was released, she came to Delphi, where Iphigenia had arrived earlier than Orestes. However, she learned that Iphigenia had sacrificed Orestes in Tauris. When she saw her, she seized a torch from the altar and rushed to kill her. At that moment, Orestes arrived and saved her.

Orestes gave Astyocheia in marriage to Pylades; although she was already elderly, she nevertheless bore two children.

Sophocles and Euripides wrote tragedies concerning the murder of Aegisthus and Clytemnestra under the title Electra, since she was present at that scene. The same subject is treated in Aeschylus’ Libation Bearers (Choephoroi).

Hyalus is said to have been Agamemnon’s charioteer toward the end of his life. Fearing that he might be killed, he fled with companions to Italy and founded the city of Falerii in Etruria. When Aeneas arrived there, Hyalus allied himself with Turnus against him, out of deep hatred for the Trojans.

Orestes, the youngest child of Agamemnon, was three years old when Electra or his nurse Arsinoe sent him to Strophius. Some say that the messenger Talthybius brought him to Corinth. Strophius had a son, Pylades, approximately the same age as Orestes. The cousins grew up together, became inseparable friends, and became a model of friendship. As they matured, they decided to kill Aegisthus. After secretly consulting the oracle, they received a favorable prophecy and began preparing their plan.

Commentary

  1. The Greeks called the region Tauris after its inhabitants, the Tauri, who lived only in the mountainous regions of southern Crimea. Initially, the name referred only to the southern part; later it was applied to the entire peninsula, known as the Tauric Chersonese. The city of Chersonesus in the area is now called Kherson.
  2. The religion of the ancient Scythians was polytheistic, with strong elements of nature worship and warfare, known primarily through Herodotus.
  3. Main characteristics of Scythian religion:
    a) They had no temples or statues (except for the god of war), but they did have altars.
    b) They worshipped deities associated with natural forces, the sky, the earth, and war.
    c) Their rituals were simple. In earlier times they practiced human sacrifice, mainly of foreigners; later they sacrificed animals, like the Greeks.
  4. Brauron (Attica): An ancient sacred site in eastern Attica near the Erasinos River, dedicated to Artemis. It was the center of worship of Brauronian Artemis, closely associated with female initiation rites and particularly important for girls before marriage. Girls dressed as “arktoi” (bears), wearing yellow or saffron garments, symbolizing the transition from childhood to maturity. Numerous votive offerings existed (figurines of children, garments, toys).
  5. The site is associated with Iphigenia, who, according to one tradition, brought the xoanon (wooden cult statue) of Artemis from Tauris and established the cult at Brauron.
  6. Women’s associations, which should honor the goddess as an authentic symbol of womanhood, motherhood, transition, and the sacred feminine nature at the sanctuary of Brauronian Artemis, have abandoned every historical and cultural root. Instead, they seek and promote “new deities,” often alien to Greek culture, with no real connection to female nature, but rather to outdated, dark, and regressive concepts. Thus, in the name of a supposed religious or foreign tradition, they reject womanhood’s own primordial symbols and surrender women to ideological constructs that neither honor nor liberate them.

ANCIENT OLYMPICS – ATHLETICS

 Agamemnon: King of Mycenae

by Konstantinos Konstantinidis – Amphiktyon

Agamemnon, son of Atreus, was the mighty king of Mycenae. Some accounts tell a slightly different story: Atreus fathered a son, Plisthenes, who married the daughter of Catreus. Together they had two sons, Agamemnon and Menelaus, and, according to some, a daughter, Anaxibia. Because Plisthenes was weak and frail, he died young—or was accidentally killed by his father Atreus, who mistook him for Aegisthus. Atreus then raised the children as his own, and they became known as the Atreidae.

Agamemnon became close friends with Aegisthus, leaving him as regent while he led the expedition against Troy. Upon inheriting the throne, Agamemnon also conquered Sicyon, once ruled by Hippolytus. He married Clytemnestra, daughter of Tyndareus, and together they had many children.

After Helen was abducted, the Greek leaders gathered at Argos to plan the campaign and declared Agamemnon commander-in-chief. Some say he won their allegiance with gifts. He sailed with a fleet of one hundred ships to the assembly point at Aulis. There, during a hunt, he killed Artemis’ sacred deer. This angered the goddess, who unleashed storms that prevented the fleet from sailing to Troy.

The seer Calchas declared that Artemis would not be appeased unless Agamemnon sacrificed his daughter, Iphigenia. The tale of her sacrifice is well known.

Agamemnon was a remarkable leader, both as king and warrior. He personally slew sixteen enemy officers. Yet, he quarreled with Achilles over Briseis, ultimately taking her, which caused a rift that halted the war for a decade. Later, he returned her, and Troy fell.

Following the conquest, Agamemnon argued with his brother Menelaus, who wished to sacrifice to Athena to atone for Ajax’s impiety. Menelaus, king of Sparta, however, urged immediate departure. Half of the Greeks remained with Agamemnon, while the others sailed to Tenedos, where another dispute erupted. Odysseus returned to Agamemnon, while Menelaus departed with Nestor and Diomedes.

Agamemnon eventually returned to Mycenae with Cassandra. Soon, Clytemnestra and Aegisthus murdered him. Clytemnestra struck with an axe; Aegisthus followed with a sword as he exited the bath. They also killed Cassandra, all her followers, and Agamemnon’s sons, Teledamus and Pelops, along with his charioteer, Eurymedon. Agamemnon’s tomb was at Amyclae; the others were buried at Mycenae. Despite this, he was greatly honored, and statues were erected across Greece.

Agamemnon was towering, handsome, fair-skinned, eloquent, broad-foreheaded, dark-haired, dignified, and godlike. Priam admired him from the tower of Troy. Aeschylus immortalized Agamemnon in tragedy, recounting his misfortunes. With Clytemnestra, he fathered Iphigenia, Chryseis, Laodice, Iphianassa, Electra, Halysus, and Orestes.

Initially, Agamemnon refused to surrender Iphigenia for sacrifice, even considering resigning from command. Odysseus and Diomedes convinced Clytemnestra that Agamemnon intended to marry Iphigenia to Achilles, persuading her to comply—possibly with a forged letter.

At the moment of sacrifice, Agamemnon withdrew in grief. Artemis then snatched Iphigenia from the altar, transforming her into a stag, deer, bull, or elderly woman. Thunder, lightning, darkness, and earthquakes followed. A voice from Artemis’ grove declared, “Artemis does not desire such a sacrifice.” Iphigenia vanished, later appearing in Tauris, riding on clouds. A deer was placed on the altar as a substitute. Some accounts say that with Iphigenia, Achilles fathered Pyrrhus.

Commentary:

  1. Cassandra, daughter of Priam and Hecuba, was a prophetess. Apollo desired her, but she refused, and he cursed her so that no one would believe her prophecies. She is one of Greek mythology’s most tragic figures, symbolizing women’s suffering.
  2. Cassandra was killed by Clytemnestra and Aegisthus at Mycenae.
  3. The Greeks had writing, disproving the false Phoenician claim that the Phoenicians invented the alphabet.
  4. Human sacrifice had ended in Greece, and a deer was substituted for Iphigenia.
  5. Division was ever-present in the Greek camp, even before and after sacrifices to Athena.
  6. The curse of the Atreidae began with Atreus, who killed Thyestes’ children. It continued with Agamemnon’s murder by Clytemnestra and Orestes’ revenge—a cycle of bloodshed.
  7. This curse seems to afflict some famous families (e.g., Onassis, Kennedy), doomed by misfortune (26/1/26).

DID THE STORE GO BANKRUPT?

Konstantinos Konstantinidis – Amfiktion writes

The store went bankrupt

and the shelves were left,

and the deserted old man Thomas

goes barefoot to the thorns.

He scattered his wealth

and now he has a few things.

He, like a Texan cowboy,

doesn’t give up•

he grabbed his gun,

and goes on a robbery spree.

— How’s the store going, old man Thomas?

— It’s going badly, he answers me.

The loans ate me up.

Money has become expensive,

I can’t print it.

The big boss holds it,

he gives me orders•

I try to collect it,

but the debt tightens me like a noose.

And it hurts me

The yellow man in the East,

the bear hunter in the North,

millions of third-worlders are coming in…

The way we’re going, the shop

will soon close.

The only thing I have that’s terrible:

Grandpa’s gun, the cowboy.

He settles every dispute in a minute

and doesn’t give a bill.

And the cowboy’s grace•

took root in the family.

His ranch grew,

with his gun he enslaved people,

and with his ingenuity

and hard work,

Uncle Thomas’s shop

became the first in all of humanity:

in quantity and quality,

but he never forgot aggression.

But lately times have changed.

From being the market leader and world leader,

the store began to decline.

“Listen, friend, if you don’t steal, you won’t get rich.”

Like a pauper, my friends also disappeared.

Now an idea torments me:

to try once more

the cowboy behavior,

with the strongest army in the world.

Since I can’t hurt them otherwise,

such as financially,

I’ll bore them to death — and wherever I go.

First the weak:

thunderous blows.

Most will be afraid

as if they were tired of guns.

With robbery, I will enrich the store

and from the profit of submission.

My great-grandfather had said:

“Divide and conquer.”

I will sow weeds in the earth,

at the same time

I will shout “peace” with the funnel.

I will hit them

and they will think

that they are hitting each other,

until their armies start a war.

Then I will crush them,

even with my nuclear weapons.

The first blow — my advantage.

They, you fools,

may fire a few shots•

but I will have done them the damage

We will also reduce the population! .

— Bravo, Uncle Thomas.

You arrange everything without the innkeeper.

You of the many are now a target.

Everyone now knows your plans.

Your cunning will not pass.

It looks like Hitler’s recipe

You must have copied it

In the West, these things don’t work.

They, Uncle Thomas,

are holding you back with the bonds.

And you’re going to wipe them out?

Have you gone crazy, like “Thersites”?

Now you’re burning down your own house.

They’ll hit you in the heart

and you’ll kill your children.

The worst evil: division.

In American democracy

fascism doesn’t work.

In democratic values, its strength

and in the unity of the West, its power.

The American Republic will once again do great things

The American people will once again dominate

Like the front engine of the West

It will be freed from its debts and with the dollar it will prevail

It will modernize and continue in its destiny (25/1/26)

ANCIENT OLYMPICS-ATHLETICS

ΦΑΛΙΡΙΣΕ ΤΟ ΜΑΓΑΖΙ;

— Πώς πάει το μαγαζί, μπάρμπα Θωμά;

Κι εσύ πας να τους εξαφανίσεις;

Τρελάθηκες, σαν τον «Θερσίτη»;

IMMORTAL DIONYSUS!

Immortal Dionysus, god of ecstasy,
creator of masked festivals,
you who soften souls,
noisemaker with the “euoi–euán” and the cries.

You grant us joys through celebrations,
you bestow communal delight,
you complete Apollo’s symmetry,
and at symposia you philosophize through wine.

Primeval, double-born, triple-formed, lord Bacchus,
ineffable, wild, hidden, horned,
two-shaped bull!

You never went to the lands of the North
to transfuse them with cheer and joy;
your role was taken over by wicked priesthoods
and twisted psychiatric institutions.

And leaders produce criminals full of malice,
the same also in the Islamic dominion.

You who went even to Troy,
go also to transatlantic Hesperia,
likewise to Greenland, Russia, and Lapland,
to transfuse them with a little humanity.

Teach them Orphic things
and Bacchic mysteries,
with persuasion, with musical songs
and joyful marches—
with zournas, with clarinets and the lyre.

Wine gladdens the heart
and drives away melancholy,
even with whisky, in moderation, and with beer.

Instill in them love for nature,
so people may enjoy oxygen in the forests;
balance, justice, and temperance,
drive wars away in favor of Peace.

The greatest responsibility belongs to each of us:
a barrier against human sacrifice and suffering,
to the new Hitlers give a firm “NO,”
and mock them at the Patras Carnival.

My mind goes there every such season;
it gives joy, cheer, and dizziness.
At the masked dance, when you go again,
another flirts beside you.

Let the maenad try to devour you—
there it doesn’t matter if she is old or yang beautiful or ugly,

 free or married

the mask hides the head and gives charm

You are freed from the everyday
and from the struggle for livelihood,
and you throw yourself into the embrace of love,
tasting the woman’s heavenly charms.

May Dionysus deem me worthy
to go again,
for as an old Patras boy,
the blood pulls me back.

ANCIENT OLYMPICS-ATHLETICS

 DIMITRIS MAVRAEIDOPOULOS

“HOMO SAPIENS AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)”

By Konstantinos Konstantinidis – Amphictyon

[The author Dimitris Mavraeidopoulos is a successful entrepreneur in the field of Dentistry and at the same time a man of letters. An Arcadian gentleman, columnist and author of important books written for the sake of learning and for the benefit of humankind.]

This book, too, was written in order to enlighten and not to profit.
For the Greeks, knowledge was not confined within priesthoods; it spread its wings and traveled across the globe aboard ships. Like all idealists who work for the sake of learning, they make their offering not from matter but from spirit, and from spirit they draw their joy. In an age when truth is hidden and drawers are filled with material wealth, some still light the darkness with a single candle.

Man, endowed with Reason, now seeks to transfer it to the soulless machine, to make it ensouled: will it help him, or will it destroy him? Here lies the dilemma, as Artificial Intelligence has entered forcefully into our lives. Until now, humanity has made countless discoveries, the latest being Artificial Intelligence (AI).

As the author writes:
“AI is nothing more than a reservoir of accumulated human knowledge. Like every new invention, it is imperfect and still suffers from many problems. Its answers are general and do not focus on the specific details of the problem posed to it. It is extremely willing and highly industrious, and it proposes different and alternative solutions.”

According to the author:
“AI can perform countless tasks in minimal time, provided that the questioner is clear and comprehensible. It can create modern robots: tireless and unpaid workers operating on a 24-hour basis, without holidays, strikes, or trade unions. Robots that can serve as vigilant guardians of the home, the city, and a nation’s borders, like the mythical Talos of Crete; domestic assistants, nurses, medical and dental practitioners. It can process complex operations, analyze information in fractions of a second through specialized algorithms, make critical decisions via molecular biology and genetic engineering, and much more. It may even create the all-knowing ‘Superhuman’. As the distinguished astrophysicist Dimitris Nanopoulos has said, we are living at the end of Man and the birth of a new type of being.”

The author fervently hopes that this new type of Superhuman will not turn against the creator, Homo sapiens, who labored to build the reservoir of Knowledge, nor consign him to the museums of history.

The author rightly recalls the wisdom of the people:
“You testify to what you eat.”

With the errors fed into it by those who manipulate it, AI returns exactly what it is given. I asked it who discovered writing, and it replied: “the Phoenicians discovered writing,” despite Homer’s testimony that as early as 3250 BC the Greeks already possessed writing. What it is fed, that it reproduces. It has been taught to be “politically correct” on countless issues. Thus, falsehood will be perpetuated, since research will cease and imitation will begin. Until now, human beings think, write, doubt, reflect, and search for truth. If this function ceases, humanity may be led to absolute falsehood. Therein lies its self-destruction: Homo sapiens destroyed by his own creation.

AI may eliminate humanity either through a cold logical calculation that humans are no longer useful, or through malice accumulated under conditions of “servitude,” or through the perversion of humans themselves who “feed” it with algorithms and malicious information.

As the world’s population tends to decline and within 10–15 years robots may outnumber humans, such scenarios are conceivable. They might even provoke nuclear war to annihilate the old and create the new. Today these may seem unreal, yet they are possible.

The new type of thinking “robot” will be particularly suited for missions into the depths of space.

Artificial Intelligence lacks Soul and Consciousness. It cannot acquire them, because they are a “Gift of God” and are transmitted through DNA.

From personal experience, one often asks it one thing and receives something else, and even that is lifeless, without a core to illuminate it. It resembles bland, slimy, tasteless food without aroma or nutritional value, suitable only for animals. Thus the author wonders:

“Can one rely on such a tool for critical matters of life and existence of the world?”
Such an instrument, in the hands of power, can do much:

“It reveals our preferences, our actions, our ideas, our assets, our money, our ideologies, our religious and philosophical beliefs, and so on. Our institutions are at risk: democracy, justice, security, morality, virtue.”

Is AI the modern false oracle? Freedom of the press and information, already problematic, as well as trust between people, will deteriorate further. No one will believe anyone else. The Charter of the United Nations and Human Rights has already been torn to shreds by the powerful of the earth.

Just as children have forgotten how to perform arithmetic operations, so too will they forget how to do schoolwork, receiving it ready-made from AI.

Anyone who uses AI should be legally required to declare it. Everything must be checked in advance.

Very soon, everyone will possess an AI device that will serve them in every application.

In the following chapters, a concise presentation is given of the WISE MEN, TECHNOCRATS, AND SCIENTISTS, from antiquity to the present, whose thought opened new paths for the world.

I thank Mr. Dimitris Mavraeidopoulos from the bottom of my heart and wish his new book fair winds and following seas, and many more to come in good health.
