SOCRATES: THE FORERUNNER OF THE INTERNET

Written by Konstantinos Konstantinidis Amphiktyon

* Antiphon said to *Socrates: All those that are called virtues among men, if you examine them you will find that they all increase with learning and study.

** Socrates replies: In our mentality Oh! Antiphon it is considered equally beautiful and equally ugly to sell the beauty of one’s youth and one’s wisdom. For if one sells the beauty of one’s youth for money to whoever desires it, we call him a prostitute. However, if someone meets someone who is beautiful in body and soul and makes him his friend, we consider him a wise man. Likewise with wisdom, those who sell it for money to whoever wants it, we call sophists, as we call prostitutes. But if someone understands that someone is intelligent and teaches him everything good he knows and makes him his friend, then we believe that he does what is fitting for a perfect citizen. I myself, Antiphon, just as another is pleased with a good horse, a dog or a bird, in a similar and better way I am pleased with good friends, and if I know anything good I teach it and recommend it to others, because I think that they will also benefit, even for a little, in terms of their Virtue. And the treasures of the ancient sages, which they left written in books, I interpret, leafing through them with friends, and we treasure up what is good. And I consider it a great gain that we become friends with each other. Commentary:

1/ Socrates was the forerunner of the internet and the first to put into practice the free and free circulation of ideas. He used to give his lessons to groups of experts for free. He also said that in order for knowledge to spread, it must be passed on to experts (groupings) and not to the masses, because if it goes directly to the public, it will not be understood. Whoever sells his beauty or his body is considered a prostitute, whoever sells the ideas of the sophist is called by the world.

2/ Good associations improve a person. On the contrary, bad ones degrade him. These particularly affect young people and children. That is why parents should monitor them. This should also be applied to the internet

.3/ It emphasizes the value of ancient wisdom. They may not have had developed technology, but as their works show, they had a developed brain. Therefore, we must study them and draw on their wisdom

.4/ It also teaches us that we should not remain passive and extinguished beacons, only receivers of ideas and teachings, but that we should also communicate these to others. The digital age favors this, that is, to be receivers and transmitters of useful ideas, and true (cross-referenced) information

5/ With the Spirit of Truth and Freedom, the Greeks created seven (7) brilliant civilizations (Pre-Flood, Minoan, Mycenaean, Classical, Alexandrian, Byzantine and European Renaissance) and spread them freely to humanity, without asking for copyrights. The return is unfortunately sad. Its barbaric peoples have recently committed several Genocides. The criminal Turkish State, instead of studying the Greek Culture of Asia Minor in which it treads and is hosted, destroys it thoughtlessly and mortally hates its Greek creators (27/5/25)
