Quite the contrary: we took to the town squares and celebrated, as though we had already won the war!

We all took victory for granted, almost as if we were prophets or had direct contact with the Divine, who had already bestowed it upon us!

A similar phenomenon had occurred, according to tradition, at another historic moment: the Battle of Marathon, where Theseus, appearing in the form of Echetlaios, is said to have fought alongside the 10,000 Athenians and 1,000 Plataeans against 100,000 Persians.

What we must concern ourselves with, however, is this: Who within the Ministry of Education allows authors to present such inaccuracies and distort historical truth in school textbooks? What criteria are used to select these authors, and who verifies the historical accuracy of what Greek children are taught?

Back in 1940, there was also what was known as the “Fifth Column,” which spread false information and propaganda in support of the Germans. Our national leader, Ioannis Metaxas, dealt harshly with those he considered to be undermining the national effort.

Today, who appoints the authors of school textbooks? What criteria are applied, and under whose supervision are those entrusted with shaping the historical consciousness of future generations selected?

Historical memory must not become a field for arbitrary interpretations. Our children have the right to learn the history of their homeland accurately, responsibly, and with respect for the truth.

Konstantinos konstantinidis

Major General (Ret.) – Author

Greek Children Are Being Taught That in 1940 We Hid in… Basements!
