K. H. Konstantinidis<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Saxony (Sachsen)<\/strong>&nbsp;is one of the 16 federal states of Germany. (See map.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In the recent elections, the AfD, which received 20.8% in the 2025 federal elections, has now achieved a historic victory with 43.8% in Saxony-Anhalt, while the CDU has collapsed to 17.2%. This points to a much stronger AfD, increasing pressure on Merz, and a difficult political balance until the next federal elections.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saxony is located in&nbsp;<strong>eastern Germany<\/strong>, bordering&nbsp;<strong>Poland<\/strong>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<strong>Czech Republic<\/strong>. Its capital is&nbsp;<strong>Dresden<\/strong>, while another major and well-known city is&nbsp;<strong>Leipzig<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does this region matter so much to Germany?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saxony carries particular weight for Germany for historical, economic and geopolitical reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Historically:<\/strong>\u00a0it was one of the most important German states, and the Kingdom of Saxony possessed considerable political and military power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Culturally:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Dresden<\/strong>\u00a0became a major center of art, music and architecture, while\u00a0<strong>Leipzig<\/strong>\u00a0developed into an important center of universities, commerce and intellectual life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Industrially:<\/strong>\u00a0the region developed a strong tradition in metallurgy, machinery, the chemical industry and, particularly, the automotive industry and microelectronics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Geographically:<\/strong>\u00a0it lies in eastern Germany, with direct access to\u00a0<strong>Poland and the Czech Republic<\/strong>, making it an important gateway from Germany toward Central and Eastern Europe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In modern Germany:<\/strong>\u00a0it is also significant because it represents an important part of the history of the former East Germany and German reunification in 1990.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there is something else very interesting:&nbsp;<strong>Saxony is not simply \u201canother German state.\u201d It has an exceptionally strong historical identity.<\/strong>&nbsp;For centuries, the Saxons had their own ruling dynasty, state, army and political power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Wettin dynasty<\/strong>&nbsp;was the great ruling house of Saxony. It ruled Saxony for centuries and acquired enormous influence in German and European politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The same dynasty produced the\u00a0<strong>Electors and later Kings of Saxony<\/strong>. Their position in imperial politics was particularly important.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dresden<\/strong>\u00a0became the magnificent court of the Wettins \u2014 palaces, art, music and collections of artworks gave Saxony great European prestige.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saxony became closely connected with\u00a0<strong>Poland<\/strong>\u00a0when the Elector of Saxony,\u00a0<strong>Augustus the Strong<\/strong>, also became King of Poland. Thus, the Saxon dynasty extended its influence far beyond Germany.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And something particularly interesting: the Wettins created one of the most important\u00a0<strong>dynastic networks in Europe<\/strong>. Branches of their house became connected with thrones such as those of\u00a0<strong>Britain, Belgium, Bulgaria and Portugal<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Saxony \u2192 Wettin \u2192 Dresden \u2192 royal court<\/strong>&nbsp;represents an important part of the historical soul of Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is no coincidence that the Allies bombed and largely destroyed Dresden, the capital of the state, during the Second World War \u2014 an event that has been regarded by many as a&nbsp;<strong>crime against culture<\/strong>, because Dresden was primarily a historic and cultural city and not simply a military target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>7 September 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lieutenant General (Ret.)
