Will you agree with knowledge by selection?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should artificial intelligence be made harmful
to migrants, terrorists, and enemies,
when it falls into the hands of malicious foreigners?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safeguards are already being designed
so that people will not be caught unprepared,
running to solve problems too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The great dilemma is: who will judge who the enemy is?
That judge, too, may be scheming and deceitful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As happened with the \u201cPericles Plan,\u201d
which was later used by the military junta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The practice itself is very old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the time of Pythagoras<\/strong> and the Orphics<\/strong>,
only a few chosen individuals became initiates,
so that the revelation of sacred teachings
would remain secret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSee, hear, be silent\u201d was the command,
and whoever spoke too freely
was immediately expelled from the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet no one violated the rule;
the warning was clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNothing is hidden under the sun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And even if the United States preserves
the mystery of AI,
China may perhaps bring it into the open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only the Orphic mysteries remained highly secret;
they were never publicly disclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Orphics kept their oath with strict devotion;
none of the initiates revealed their identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From one perspective, secrecy is beneficial:
confidential matters should not be given to everyone,
nor to individuals with a criminal past
or to a hostile nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But with AI a paradox arises:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are those who control artificial intelligence
truly virtuous people,
or do they possess some harmful trait?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shall we entrust it to individuals
who aspire to dominate humanity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To people of immeasurable wealth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To religious zealots,
or to those with flaws of character?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or are they driven by some extreme ideology?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In such a case,
they could bring harm to all society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the West, everything has a price,
small or great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the secret is sold to a terrorist,
he may harm humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We live in an age of suspicion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prudence has retreated before malice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Violence and mass terror prevail everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world has been divided into blocs,
and the West fears the East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mutual disclosure of secrets
often restores a balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Espionage assumes that role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our age, when two or three individuals possess wealth
equal to that of medium-sized states,
the danger of AI may arise from them,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and it is difficult for democratic citizens
to confront such power
unless they become concerned from now on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet I believe that humanity,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

if it acts in unity,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

can confront even the most powerful tyrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In ancient Athens such men were ostracized;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

today they are made kings and deified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the responsibility lies with ourselves,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

for neglecting public affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democracy is the finest form of government,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

yet at times it declines into mob rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More often it transforms into oligarchy and dictatorship,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and the cycle closes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with some revolution or catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ideal, still undiscovered,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

is the aristocracy of the wise,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in place of incapable presidents and prime ministers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May it one day be discovered<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and applied here on earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we encrypt military plans,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

conversations, state secrets,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and our cryptographic systems,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

how can we leave artificial intelligence exposed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and indeed by our own choice,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to individuals who may lead us<\/p>\n\n\n\n

into absolute submission<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and bring us suffering?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To grant them such an intelligent weapon,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

one that opens so many doors,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

would be the greatest folly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
