{"id":4236,"date":"2026-04-14T22:42:50","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T19:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amphiktyon.org\/?p=4236"},"modified":"2026-04-14T22:42:50","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T19:42:50","slug":"the-hidden-civil-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amphiktyon.org\/?p=4236","title":{"rendered":"THE HIDDEN CIVIL WAR"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Konstantinos Konstantinidis \u2013 Amphiktyon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A brother to the Greek stands near,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It starts from Troia<br>yet in his company turns foolish;<br>division he never abandons,<br>and the foreigner he calls to judge his fate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He may even embrace his enemy,<br>so long as party passions align.<br>And the outsider arrives \u2014 never for free \u2014<br>to tear the heart from the oath-breaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In civil war we trembled;<br>brother rose against brother,<br>with neither mercy nor grace,<br>not even a prayer for the dying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some summoned Athens,<br>others cried out to Sparta,<br>while Rome lay in wait,<br>seeking the moment to bind and undo us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDemocracy,\u201d said some \u2014 \u201coligarchy,\u201d said others,<br>yet in the end, we fell once more into chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In peace, a people flourishes;<br>in civil war, it grows savage.<br>Hatred awakens, conflict spreads,<br>and blood answers blood:<br>brother against brother, child against father,<br>while Strife casts reason into shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guard your words, and whom you trust;<br>reveal not the depths of your belief.<br>Whether red or blue,<br>the slaughterhouse awaits \u2014<br>I have lived it, in occupation and in war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trust not even the sun;<br>hold fast your tongue \u2014<br>for silence is the wiser path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Civil war feeds on passion;<br>treachery grows and kills.<br>With doctrines they intoxicate the crowds,<br>bidding them forget their homeland<br>for the mirage of some distant ideal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To the \u201crams\u201d they grant power and gold,<br>to the \u201csheep\u201d enclosure and silence.<br>Crime is crowned as courage,<br>prudence condemned as betrayal,<br>and reason stands powerless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National claims are sacrificed<br>upon the altar of party rule.<br>In the squares \u2014 slogans, not dialogue;<br>the rational is suspect, the furious exalted,<br>the wise dismissed as unfit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A world undone by madness.<br>Parties like factions of thieves,<br>bound by greed and quiet lawlessness.<br>Their unity is complicity,<br>their offering \u2014 the homeland itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They promise equality, speak of merit,<br>yet once in power \u2014 disorder reigns:<br>privation for the many, ease for the few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They govern through vengeance,<br>feigning service to the people,<br>while serving only themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus begins civil war \u2014<br>with words that sound noble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dark were those days;<br>even the sun withdrew in shame.<br>Brother slew brother,<br>and division took monstrous form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPatriot\u201d or enemy \u2014<br>a word both vague and deadly.<br>And the people, lost between,<br>knew not where to stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With fear and betrayal as guides,<br>one could be sent to Acheron with ease.<br>Interrogations, persecutions, camps \u2014<br>a land divided: mountain and city,<br>East set against West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while we should have claimed our rights,<br>we turned upon each other.<br>Thus Greece was wounded to the depths \u2014<br>and endured, though at a bitter cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The blood of our children was not in vain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Never again civil war.<br>Never again such strife.<br>Even within parties,<br>let a new order rise to end it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet factions linger still,<br>a hidden war beneath the surface;<br>progress remains in shadow,<br>as cunning discord stifles every step forward,<br>while the politician gathers his coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amphiktyon \u2013 Retired Major General Konstantinos Konstantinidis<\/strong><br>Writer, Member of the Society of Greek Writers<br><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amphiktyon.blogspot.com\">http:\/\/www.amphiktyon.blogspot.com<\/a><br><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amphiktyon.org\">http:\/\/www.amphiktyon.org<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Konstantinos Konstantinidis \u2013 Amphiktyon A brother to the Greek stands near, It starts from Troiayet in his company turns foolish;division he never abandons,and the foreigner he calls to judge his fate.
