If our politicians had studied the Iliad, they would have known that the Heroes rose in the firmament, acted and set, falling on the battlefield, just as it happens in nature with the stars, which succeed each other and do not appear in the firmament themselves. The exceptions are Agamemnon, Nestor and Odysseus among the Achaeans and Priam and Aeneas among the Trojans, who survived the war thanks to wisdom and intelligence, although they also possessed great courage.

Coming now to our own country, if our politicians followed the teachings of the Iliad, they would not remain in the political firmament for life, permanently the same worn-out figures, whose light has long since gone out and all they offer are scandals, acts of folly, injustice, crimes and even betrayals. However, especially the politicians after the change of government have only caused harm to the country. This is also expressed in all the opinion polls.

They would see that when the opponent changes strategy, you must also change in order to face him. When your domestic front has been shaken – as is now happening with the upheaval of agricultural production – Mr. Mitsotakis should have been worried and not expected the crisis to be defused by public opinion, which wants open roads for holidays and, more importantly, its nutrition. If the Government had a correct policy, it should have realized that its star for the USA has gone out. It is therefore a matter of time for it to leave so that someone suitable can come to cooperate with the USA and support our national issues in an era where the environment is in danger. And of course, the issue of agricultural sustainability for our country has been indispensable from ancient times to the present day and therefore a solution should have been given long ago and not a dismantling as the EU demands. With the orders of the EEC, we destroyed our industry in the post-colonial period and with the memoranda, our national economy.

It is sad that politicians do not come out today with a coherent speech and that they have not grasped the problem of the country’s survival in its entirety, from external and internal dangers (Turkey, immigration). Is the reappearance of Messrs. Samaras and Karamanlis positive to sound the alarm in the country or to lead the renewal? . But today new politicians are needed to lift the burden and unfortunately the parties and fragments of the Parliament are so worn out that they are considered null. Few personalities are distinguished outside the party space who possess structured speech and political thought (such as Internationalists, Generals, Admirals, diplomats, historians, etc.) and few ministers who have distinguished themselves with their work (such as Dendias, Pierrakakis, etc.)

Our Parliament has unfortunately become a neighborhood “cafe” in which, with shouts and insults, they attack each other for irrelevant issues like the “women” of the old Greek neighborhood. The same applies to the channels where the same worn-out faces with the same caged speech, the only thing they do not do is dialogue. The exceptions are certain websites, a few channels and heroic journalists who dare to tell some truths. Our non-existent intellectual world is hunched over and taking a position for the next day.

Overall, the country is immersed in a partisan quagmire where nothing can flourish and be created except scandals and corruption. All of them without visions, without creative zeal for progress, with an obsession with the party interest which they even place above the national interest

This is the reason why today no self-respecting person thinks of joining the partisan quagmire.

Even good politicians in the quagmire are getting dirty and inactive. In general, the country’s politics need renewal and this can be done with a new Constitution that will not be made by failed politicians to their own liking, but by the people themselves, that is, the professional classes with the formation of a People’s National Assembly. But who has the “guts” to undertake this task? Is there a Solon or Zorba today?

*Amphiktyon the Major General (retd.)
