Medicine had advanced to a great extent so that they created medical schools among them:

a/The one of Rhodes was the most flourishing but not the first

b/ The one of Kos was the most glorious of all the others. The Asclepiades diligently noted the history of diseases and their treatments as well as the results in comparison with the previous

c/ The The Cnidian school was also glorious and rivaled that of Cos, but the Cnidian doctors noted the symptoms by which they multiplied diseases, without distinguishing between causes and effects, and administered active medicines.

d/ The Italian school of Croton had a great reputation for the excellent Crotonian and Acragadian doctors

e/ The Cyrenaic school of Libya In addition to the above schools, we must also mention the Gymnasium Medicine of the Gymnasiums, which created a separate branch of Medicine. In the aforementioned schools, numerous doctors were trained before the birth of Hippocrates:

1/ Polycleitus, the doctor who cured the seriously ill Phalaris, the tyrant of Acragadians

2/ Democides, the Crotonian, He cured the dislocation of Darius the Hystaspo’s leg and an ulcer on the chest of his wife Atossa. He also wrote a book on medicine

3/ Acron the Acragantinian, a contemporary of Empedocles, whom Pliny mentions as the leader of the Empirical heresy and Plutarch as the physician who cured the plague of Athens by burning. According to Suidas, he wrote in Doric on Medicine and Hygienic Diet

4/ Philistion the Sicilian, according to Diogenes, Laertius and Galen, he wrote on complementary medicines

5/ Apollonides of Cos, shortly before Empedocles, flourished as a physician to the king of Persia, who was tortured and buried alive, on the same day that they buried the daughter of Xerxes and sister of Artaxerxes, Amytis, whom he was treating. Her beauty apparently led the doctor into inappropriate things, as Ctesias recounts

6/ Aegimius of Elis, according to Galen, wrote a book “on the pulse”. Today we call them pulses

.7/ Euryphon of Cnidus, a member of the Asclepiad family, wrote the “Cnidian Opinions”, on opposing medicines “he chose those who were jealous of the female genital organs, against the woman’s tit, to suck milk from the female’s nipple”, he treated dropsy with laxatives and was involved in the treatment of chronic diseases, as Hippocrates mentions

.8/ Ikkos of Tarentum, who applied them to medicine and gymnastics

9/ Prodicus of Selymbria or Leontinus, a doctor of gymnastics medical teaching. He ordered the sick to run on foot from Athens to Megara and back without intermediate rest.

10/ Akesias, a doctor during the years of Hippocrates, had such misfortune that the proverb remained: “Akesias is cured.” He wrote about food.

11/ Antisthenes, a doctor who was ridiculed by Aristophanes because of his effeminateness and softness.

12/ Diagoras of Miletus, a student of Democritus who was accused of atheism. According to Dioscorides, he disapproved of the use of opium for pain in the ears and mouth, and according to Aetio, he is the manufacturer of eye drops.

13/ Antiphon of Rhamnus in Corinth is said to have cured diseases through words and music (obviously they would have been mental illnesses).

14/ Ctesias of Cnidus, an Asclepian and relative of Hippocrates and contemporary of Xenophon, was the physician of the king of Persia.

15/ Ariston, a physician who, according to Galen, had composed the colic mixture of medicines against pain, and Celsus also mentions some ointment against gout.

16/ Pythocles, a physician who is mentioned in the 7th book of the Epidemics of Hippocrates, “giving milk to those who were making milk mixed with water in abundance.”

17/ Akoumenos and his son Eryximachus are doctors mentioned by Plato, the former being a friend of Socrates

18/ Archidamus, who according to Galen disapproved of rubbing the skin with oil19/ Meton, the famous astronomer, a contemporary of Socrates, who also had medical knowledge. Female doctors are also mentioned before the heroic times:a/ Hecate, the wife of Aeetes, king of Colchis (Black Sea), who according to Diogenes Siculus, was engaged in the packaging of oxymorons and poisons. She is credited with the discovery of Aconite

. The daughters of the fierce Hecate Circe, Medea and Aggitia were known for packaging poisons and for discovering many herbs useful in medicine. During the Trojan times, the following are mentioned:

1. Helen, who knew the Nepenthes medicine or “Elenion”

2. Polydamna, according to Herodotus, knew the herbs of Egypt

3. Oenone, Helen’s rival, knowledgeable of many medicinal plants and many others.

It would be an omission not to mention the Doctors: Agnodike, as Hyginus mentions, walked around in men’s clothes and learned medicine from the doctor Herophilus. The doctors sued her at the Areopagus and she was acquitted because she benefited women who were in pain during childbirth. Since then, the Athenians amended the law that prohibited female doctors and many entered obstetrics. If the Governments of Greece had a vision, our country would be the largest Hospital Center in the world and not only that but also a Spiritual one (15/10/25)

Sources: “ON HIPPOCRATES” Speech delivered on May 20, 1851, ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDATION OF OTHONOS UNIVERSITY, UNDER GEORGE PRINARIS Professor of General Nosology and Hygiene and in the current year, COURT OF THE MEDICAL SCHOOL

*Amphiktyon Major General (retd) Konstantinos Konstantinidis Author, Member of the Society of Greek Writers http://www.amphiktyon.blogspot.com (My main blog AMPHIKTYON ARTICLES & BOOKS-POEMS(old) AMPHIKTYON.BLOGSPOT.COM (In English) ANCIENT OLYMPICS-ATHLETICS (The Olympic Games) amphiktyon-poetry.blogspot.com (My poetry collection) AMPHIKTYONBOOKS (Books, Studies and timeless texts) https://amphiktyon.org (My personal website) Anyone who wishes to delete it should request “delete”

Written by Konstantinos Konstantinidis of Amphiktyon Continuing the presentation of the Greek doctors of antiquity from the Speech of Professor Georgios Prinaris (see sources), we see that the Medical Science was very flourishing even in antiquity, when other peoples practiced medicine with exorcisms, with magic and by exposing patients to the triodes to enhance the …

Συνεχίστε την ανάγνωση του “FAMOUS DOCTORS AND DOCTORS”

[1

post-3761","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
